Our Favourite Scenic Trails & Bush Tracks

Waiheke Island isn’t just about beaches and wine – it’s also home to some seriously stunning walking trails. Whether you’re into clifftop views, native bush, or a gentle coastal stroll, there’s a walk here for you.
Here are a few of our favourites that are perfect for taking in the natural beauty of the island.
The Headlands Walk (Matiatia to Owhanake Bay Loop)
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
Start: Matiatia Wharf
If you’re coming by ferry, this is one of the most accessible walks on the island – and one of the most rewarding. The loop takes you through rolling farmland, native bush, and along dramatic clifftops with panoramic views back to Auckland. You might even spot dolphins if you’re lucky! The track is well-marked, and there are plenty of scenic spots for a picnic or photo stop.
Te Ara Hura – Waiheke’s Walking Network
Duration: Variable (over 100 km of trails)
Start: Various points
Te Ara Hura means “the discovering path” – and that’s exactly what this trail network offers. You can mix and match short walks or take on full-day hikes depending on your energy levels. One popular section is the Church Bay Circuit, which loops from Oneroa through vineyards, native bush, and coastal tracks. Another great pick is the Onetangi to Rocky Bay walk, which takes you through wetlands and forest.
Whakanewha Regional Park
Duration: 30 minutes to 2 hours
Start: Car park off Gordons Road
This regional park is on the quieter, southern side of the island. The walks here are peaceful and forest-filled, with streams, waterfalls, and ancient pōhutukawa trees. The Nikau Track is an easy favourite, and if you’re after a bit of a workout, head up the Tarata Track for views over the bay. It’s also a great picnic spot and has one of the island’s more low-key beaches at the bottom.
Oneroa to Little Oneroa Coastal Walk
Duration: 20–30 minutes
Start: Oneroa Beach
A short and scenic walk along the cliffs between Oneroa and Little Oneroa, this is a great one to do after coffee or lunch. It’s relatively easy and gives you beautiful views back across the bay. There’s a staircase partway through and some uneven ground, so good footwear is a plus.
Tramline Track
Duration: 1.5 hours return
Start: Near the end of Trig Hill Road
This walk takes you down through lush bush and alongside an old tramline that once carried supplies to the island’s early settlements. It’s tranquil, shady, and great for birdwatching. At the end, you’ll reach the water’s edge near Rocky Bay, where you can rest before heading back uphill.
Tips for Walking on Waiheke
Wear proper footwear – even the easier tracks can get muddy or steep in places.
Bring water and a hat, especially in summer.
Some walks have limited signage, so download a map or use the AllTrails app.
Always respect the land – stay on paths and take rubbish with you.
