Best Spots For A Beer (or Cocktail)

Waiheke Island is famous for its wine – and for good reason – but if you’re not a wine drinker, don’t worry: there’s still plenty here for you to enjoy.

Whether you’re into craft beer, cocktails or gin, Waiheke delivers.

From breweries to beach bars to distilleries, here’s where to go when you’re in the mood for anything but wine.

The Heke

📍 Onetangi

Home to Waiheke Brewing Co, The Heke is a relaxed, family-friendly brewery with something for everyone.

They serve a solid lineup of craft beers brewed on site, plus great food and often live music. It’s casual, open-air, and has a really welcoming vibe – perfect for lunch or an afternoon drink.

Alibi Brewer’s Lounge

📍 Beneath Tantalus Estate, Onetangi

Tucked under one of the island’s most iconic vineyards, Alibi is anything but ordinary. Think moody interiors, leather armchairs and a seriously good cocktail list.

Their own small-batch beers are brewed on-site and the bartenders know their way around a proper G&T or whisky sour.

Waiheke Distilling Co.

📍 Cowes Bay (Eastern end)

Perched high above the coastline, this boutique distillery is a gin lover’s dream. Their botanical gins are crafted using local ingredients, and the cocktail menu is top-notch.

The views are breathtaking and the vibe is peaceful and stylish. It’s a bit of a drive but it’s 100% worth the effort.

Charlie Farley’s

📍 Onetangi Beach

Right on the beach, Charlie Farley’s is a laid-back Waiheke classic. It’s great for breakfast, lunch, sunset drinks and the atmosphere is super casual – sandy feet welcome.

Their bar menu includes local and international beers, great cocktails and plenty of non-alcoholic options. If you’re after easygoing beach vibes with a good drink in hand, this is your spot.

Whether you’re sipping craft beer in the sunshine, enjoying a botanical gin with sweeping sea views, or just relaxing on the beach with a cocktail in hand, Waiheke has so much to offer – even if wine’s not your thing.
