Stunning Beaches on Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand, each offering something a little different – whether you’re looking for swimming, paddleboarding, rockpool exploring or just a peaceful place to unwind.

Here are our favourite beaches on the island and what makes each one worth a visit.

Onetangi Beach

Best for: Swimming, walking, family-friendly fun

This is Waiheke’s biggest beach – a long, golden stretch with calm waves and plenty of space to spread out. The sand is soft, the water is swimmable most of the year, and there are great restaurants and bars just across the road (like Three Seven Two and Charlie Farley’s). It’s also one of the best spots to catch the sunset.

Palm Beach

Best for: Safe swimming, picnics, chilled-out vibes

Quieter than Onetangi, Palm Beach is a sheltered cove with crystal-clear water and fewer crowds. It’s perfect for families, thanks to a kids’ playground and BBQ facilities nearby. There’s even a secret little nudist beach at the western end if you’re feeling adventurous!

Oneroa Beach

Best for: Easy access, coffee breaks, quick swims

Just a short walk from the main village, Oneroa Beach is ideal for a quick dip or a sunbathe after brunch or shopping. You can grab a coffee or ice cream from nearby cafes and stroll right down to the sand. It’s a good stop for those without a car or looking to stay close to the ferry.

Little Oneroa

Best for: Local vibes, pizza picnics, kayaking

Tucked just around the headland from Oneroa Beach, this smaller bay is beloved by locals. It has a free BBQ area, a playground, and a pizza caravan (Dragonfired) right by the beach. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the shoreline, or just relax in the shade of the pohutukawa trees.

Hekerua Beach

Best for: Peace and quiet, quick dips

A tiny, often-overlooked gem, Hekerua Beach is perfect if you’re looking for a peaceful swim away from the crowds. The shore is made up of shells and pebbles rather than sand, but the water is usually calm, and the setting is lovely.

To get there take the scenic Te Aroha Ave walkway path which is accessible from Karaka road.

Enclosure Bay

Best for: Calm, shallow water, snorkelling, rock pools

Enclosure Bay feels like nature’s swimming pool. With large rock formations creating a natural breakwater, the water here stays incredibly calm – perfect for kids or anyone nervous in the ocean.

It’s also a great spot for snorkelling on a clear day, with lots of small fish and marine life around the rocks. Pack some goggles and some reef shoes if you’re up for a bit of underwater exploring.

No matter which beach you end up at, you’re bound to find your own slice of paradise on Waiheke!
